Moscato d'Asti DOCG
Moscato d'Asti DOCG is a prestigious wine appellation located in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. The designation covers vineyards across 52 communes in the provinces of Asti, Cuneo, and Alessandria, encompassing the historic hills of Monferrato and Langhe. The appellation received DOCG status in 1993, recognizing the distinctive quality and traditional production methods of this sweet sparkling wine.
The terroir consists of calcareous-clay soils with good drainage, situated at elevations between 120 and 685 meters above sea level. Only Moscato Bianco (White Muscat) grapes are permitted, and the wines must be produced using the tank method rather than traditional bottle fermentation. The production process involves partial fermentation that preserves natural grape sugars while creating gentle effervescence, typically resulting in wines with alcohol levels between 4.5% and 6.5%.
Moscato d'Asti wines are characterized by their delicate sweetness, low alcohol content, and fresh aromatic intensity. The wines display pronounced floral and fruity aromas including peach, apricot, orange blossom, and rose petals, with a light, frizzante sparkle rather than full effervescence. The natural acidity balances the residual sugar, creating wines that are refreshing despite their sweetness and are traditionally enjoyed as dessert wines or aperitifs.
