Château Cos D'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel is a red wine producer located in Saint-Estèphe, the northernmost of the four principal Médoc communes. The estate sits on a gravel ridge immediately south of the Gironde's tributary streams, bordering Pauillac, and was classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It is among the most recognisable properties in Saint-Estèphe, partly due to its distinctive pagoda-topped chai that reflects the estate's historical connections to trade with the East.

Saint-Estèphe is characterised by heavier clay soils than its southern Médoc neighbours, which gives its wines a firmer tannic structure, naturally higher acidity, and a tendency toward slower development. The appellation produces red wines built primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot playing a significant supporting role. These structural qualities make Saint-Estèphe wines well suited to extended cellaring, and they typically display dark fruit, earth, and tobacco characters as they age.

Les Pagodes de Cos is the estate's second wine, drawing on younger vines and declassified lots from the grand vin selection. It is assembled from the same varieties cultivated at the estate — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot — and offers an earlier-drinking expression of the Saint-Estèphe appellation while retaining the structured character associated with the property.
