Château D'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is a wine estate located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France. It holds the unique distinction of being the only property classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac, a category created specifically to recognize its singular standing. The estate produces sweet white wine from botrytis-affected grapes, a process that requires extraordinary patience and precision.

Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, the so-called noble rot, which concentrates sugars, acidity, and complex aromatic compounds as the fungus dehydrates the berries. The resulting wines are deeply honeyed yet balanced by bright acidity, with flavors that can include apricot, citrus peel, saffron, and beeswax. Château d'Yquem harvests grape by grape across multiple passes through the vineyard, selecting only those berries at the precise stage of botrytization, which makes production extremely labor-intensive and yields very small quantities per vine.

Beyond its classic Sauternes, the estate also produces Y d'Yquem — sometimes written "Ygrec" — a dry white Bordeaux made from the same Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. This wine occupies a distinct stylistic space from the estate's sweet bottlings, offering a richer, more textured expression of dry white Bordeaux rather than a conventional entry-level wine.
