Clai

Clai is a small wine producer based in Istria, the triangular peninsula on Croatia's Adriatic coast shared with Slovenia and Italy. The estate is known for a committed approach to natural and biodynamic viticulture, working with indigenous Istrian varieties and minimal intervention in the cellar. Their wines have attracted attention among natural wine enthusiasts in Europe and beyond.

Istria's combination of red and grey soils (locally known as terra rossa and flysch), a Mediterranean climate tempered by Adriatic breezes, and significant diurnal temperature variation creates conditions well suited to aromatic white varieties. The region's signature grape is Malvazija Istarska — Istrian Malvasia — a variety distinct from other Malvasias found around the Mediterranean. It typically produces wines with herbal and stone fruit character, good natural acidity, and a pleasantly bitter finish. In the hands of producers working with extended skin contact or low-sulphur approaches, it can take on additional texture and complexity.

The Sv. Jakov Malvazija is an example of Clai's approach to this grape, vinified in a style that reflects the producer's preference for traditional and low-intervention methods. The wine takes its name from the village of Sv. Jakov (Saint James) in the Brtonigla area of northwestern Istria, grounding it in a specific terroir within the broader regional context.
