Col D'Orcia

Col d'Orcia is an estate winery located in Sant'Angelo in Colle, on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino in Tuscany. The estate sits within the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, one of Italy's most strictly regulated appellations, and produces wines exclusively from Sangiovese — known locally as Brunello. The property encompasses both vineyards and farmland, and has long been among the larger landholders within the denomination.

Brunello di Montalcino is produced entirely from Sangiovese Grosso and must be aged for a minimum period in oak before release, with Riserva bottlings subject to even longer maturation requirements. The southwestern side of Montalcino, where Col d'Orcia's vineyards are concentrated, tends to produce wines with generous fruit and a somewhat rounder structure compared to the more austere character often associated with the northern and eastern exposures of the hill. The resulting wines are typically full-bodied, with firm tannins, high acidity, and considerable aging potential.

Poggio al Vento is Col d'Orcia's single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, sourced from a specific plot within the estate. Riserva designations in this appellation indicate extended aging beyond the standard Brunello requirements, and single-vineyard Riserva bottlings are produced only in vintages deemed exceptional. The 2015 vintage in Montalcino is widely considered one of the stronger recent harvests, characterized by concentrated fruit and structural balance.
