Domaine Christophe Pichon

Domaine Christophe Pichon

Domaine Christophe Pichon is a wine producer based in Condrieu, in the northern Rhône valley of France. The domaine works on the steep slopes along the river's right bank, where the local vineyards are among the most labour-intensive in France.

Condrieu is an appellation devoted to a single white grape, Viognier. The vineyards sit on terraced hillsides, often held in place by dry-stone walls, and the soils are largely granitic with mica-rich weathered rock. Viognier is a low-yielding, temperamental variety, and the warm, sheltered slopes above the Rhône suit it well. Condrieu is known for aromatic wines with notes of apricot, peach, white blossom and sometimes violet, and a rich, textured palate. Styles vary with picking date, fermentation vessel and how much oak is used, ranging from fresh and mineral to broader and more opulent.

Viognier is the grape behind the Condrieu from Domaine Christophe Pichon. It is best served lightly chilled rather than cold, so that its perfume and texture show. It pairs well with shellfish, poultry in cream sauces, and mildly spiced dishes.
