Jack Daniel's is a Tennessee whiskey distillery located in Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee. It is one of the most recognisable American whiskey producers and operates under a registered distillery in a county that is, by local ordinance, a dry county — an oft-cited quirk of its home. The distillery produces Tennessee whiskey, a category that sits alongside but is legally distinct from bourbon.
Tennessee whiskey is defined in part by the Lincoln County Process, whereby the new spirit is filtered through or steeped in charcoal made from sugar maple wood before ageing in new charred oak barrels. This step, known as charcoal mellowing, is considered the defining characteristic of the style and contributes a smoother, subtly sweet profile compared to straight bourbon. Jack Daniel's ages its whiskey in single-use, new charred oak barrels, consistent with American whiskey regulations.
The range spans several expressions, from the flagship Old No. 7 to Gentleman Jack, which undergoes a second charcoal mellowing for a notably smoother finish, and flavoured variants such as Tennessee Fire, which blends the core whiskey with cinnamon liqueur. These expressions reflect the breadth of the Tennessee whiskey category, from traditional grain-forward profiles to sweetened, liqueur-based line extensions.
