Thanisch

Dr. Thanisch is one of the historic estates of Bernkastel, a town at the heart of the Mosel wine region in Germany. The estate is closely associated with the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard, one of Germany's most famous single vineyard sites, whose steep slate slopes above the Mosel River produce wines of considerable complexity. The estate produces white wines from Riesling, the dominant and defining grape of the Mosel.

The Mosel is characterized by its dramatic river bends, precipitously steep slate terraces, and a cool continental climate that allows Riesling to ripen slowly, retaining high natural acidity. This combination of slate soils and cool temperatures gives Mosel Rieslings their signature profile: pronounced mineral character, delicate body, and a tension between acidity and fruit. The German Prädikat system, which classifies wines by the natural sugar level of the grapes at harvest, is central to understanding the region's wines. Kabinett is the lightest designation within this system, indicating wines made from fully ripe grapes without late harvesting.

The Bernkasteler Kabinett Trocken in the current range reflects a dry interpretation of this lightest Prädikat level, a style that has gained ground in the Mosel as producers respond to demand for wines with less residual sugar. Trocken (dry) Kabinett from Bernkastel typically offers lean, precise fruit, firm acidity, and the stony, mineral qualities that slate-based Mosel terroir tends to impart to Riesling.
