Canelones

Canelones is Uruguay's largest wine-producing department, located in the southern part of the country north of the capital Montevideo. The region has been central to Uruguay's wine industry since the 19th century, when European immigrants established vineyards and introduced traditional winemaking practices. Today it remains the country's primary source of quality wine production, accounting for a substantial portion of Uruguay's output.

The region experiences a temperate oceanic climate moderated by the Atlantic Ocean and the Río de la Plata estuary, which provide cooling influences and help regulate temperature fluctuations. Soils in Canelones are typically composed of granite-based substrates mixed with clay and sand, conditions that have proven well-suited to viticulture. The maritime influence and moderate rainfall create relatively consistent growing conditions, though vintage variation does occur depending on seasonal weather patterns.

Canelones is known particularly for its red wines, with Tannat and Merlot among the principal varieties cultivated in the region. Tannat, a dark-skinned grape with origins in southwestern France, has become Uruguay's signature variety and typically produces structured wines with notable tannin profiles. Merlot plantings also thrive in Canelones, often used both as a standalone wine and in blends with Tannat. The region's cooler climate compared to some other South American wine areas tends to produce wines with good acidity and complexity rather than overripe characteristics.
