Maipo Valley

Maipo Valley is Chile's most historically significant wine region, located in the Central Valley just south of Santiago. The valley extends from the Andes Mountains in the east to the coastal hills in the west, encompassing approximately 10,000 hectares of vineyards. This region established Chile's international reputation for quality wine production and remains home to many of the country's most prestigious wineries.

The valley benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The Maipo River provides essential irrigation, while the proximity to the Andes creates significant diurnal temperature variation that helps preserve acidity in the grapes. The region is divided into three main zones: Alto Maipo near the mountains features alluvial soils and cooler temperatures, Central Maipo has deeper, more fertile soils, and Maipo Bajo toward the coast receives maritime influence that moderates temperatures.

Cabernet Sauvignon dominates plantings in Maipo Valley and produces the region's most acclaimed wines, particularly in the Alto Maipo sub-region. The valley also successfully cultivates Carménère, Chile's signature variety that was long mistaken for Merlot, as well as Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Maipo wines are typically characterized by ripe fruit flavors, good structure, and when from higher elevations, notable elegance and aging potential that reflects the region's optimal conditions for Bordeaux varieties.
