The 1995 Brut Collection is breathtakingly beautiful. Smoke, pastry and caramel are some of the nuances that emerge from a sublime Champagne that recalls a fine, aged grand cru Burgundy in its complexity and level of depth. Very vinous, with a delicate, almost imperceptible mousse.
The wine displays a brilliant golden yellow hue with brass reflections and a very delicate, fine mousse. Subtle nuances of nougat emerge, underlined by hints of yellow fruit, dried apricots, and sweet spices such as cinnamon and cloves, creating a highly complex bouquet. On the palate, a symphony of flavors unfolds—dried fruits, candied zest, Turkish honey with hazelnuts, and caramelized notes—all supported by a refined acidity structure. Enthrallingly multi-layered and long-lasting, it leaves a lasting impression.
Krug’s 1989 Brut Krug Collection represents their most recent in a long-running series of late-releases featuring a vintage they have decided is especially expressive after entering what they refer to as its “second life.” In theory, if ideal cellar conditions were maintained and the initial disgorgement of the 1989 vintage was purchased when it came on the market around a decade ago, the wine today would essentially be the same, though the relevant direct comparison has not been made. Given the relative infrequency with which a vintage is “declared” by Krug, their “Collection” bottlings represent the remnants of an already elite selection. This 1989 marks the first re-release from the only series of three consecutive vintage bottlings – 1988-1990 – in Krug’s history. The mingling of saline, nutty, and caramelized notes in the nose, which defines the wine’s performance, is stunning. Butter-toasted hazelnuts, dried wild mushrooms, kelp, and cocoa blend in a silken, mouthwatering matrix reminiscent of oyster liquor laced with fresh lemon juice, retaining a youthful citric energy. The wine finishes with pronounced umami and tangy vibrancy of citrus and salt. After being open for a day, the nutty elements become more piquant and walnut-like, though smoky hints of oxidation remain balanced by citric and mineral elements, positively integrated into a mysteriously diverse show. The palate becomes plusher, perhaps in part due to diminishing mousse, and creamy, almost in a whipped-cream fashion. However, the long finish continues to offer uncanny refreshment. This wine can certainly be safely held for at least a few more years and may continue to “plateau” or evolve if kept in ideal cellar conditions.
The 1985 Brut Collection takes some time for the glass to fully open up. The wine transforms into a burnished, vinous expression with air, revealing nuances of hazelnuts, ash, smoke, and truffles. This rich, textured collection has been tasted four times recently, and this bottle stands out as one of the finer, fresher ones sampled. Ideally, the wine is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest. France’s most northerly wine region, Champagne is now home to 15,000 growers and 290 ‘houses’. A blend of grape varieties is usually required: white Chardonnay to add fruit and elegance, and two reds – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – to provide body and backbone.
