The 2010 Georges Roumier Corton-Charlemagne is a profound and structured white Burgundy, marrying power with crystalline precision. The nose is intense and complex, revealing layers of citrus peel, crushed stone, grilled almonds, and subtle smoky reduction. On the palate, it is commanding yet focused, with a firm backbone of acidity driving flavors of lemon oil, chalk, and white orchard fruit. There's a palpable tension and depth here, with the wine unfolding slowly and leaving a long, mineral-laden finish. This is a serious, age-worthy Corton-Charlemagne that still shows remarkable freshness and restraint.
The 2009 Corton-Charlemagne melds gorgeous textural richness and depth with a vibrant expression of fruit that shows considerable freshness. The wine turns increasingly explosive on the palate as the fruit continues to emerge. All of the elements build nicely to the intense, totally alive finish. Roumier’s parcel is on the western edges of Charlemagne, near Pernand-Vergelesses.
The 2003 is the finest Corton-Charlemagne I’ve tasted from this estate. Benefiting (for once) from its less-than-stellar location on the Pernand-Vergelesses side of the hill of Corton, it reveals a nose of buttered almonds, toast, and sweet pears. This is an extremely sensual wine with medium body, outstanding depth of fruit, admirable purity, and a lengthy finish. Its plush, spicy personality displays super-ripe white fruit flavors as well as a beguiling note of candied almonds.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours.
