Sena is a Chilean winery established as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick of Viña Errázuriz in 1995. Located in the Aconcagua Valley, approximately 65 miles north of Santiago, this collaboration was created to produce a single premium red wine that would showcase the potential of Chilean terroir using Bordeaux varietals.

The Aconcagua Valley benefits from a Mediterranean climate with significant diurnal temperature variation, influenced by both the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes Mountains to the east. The region's diverse soils, ranging from alluvial deposits to clay and limestone, provide ideal conditions for cultivating red grape varieties. This climate allows for extended ripening periods while maintaining natural acidity in the grapes.

The estate focuses exclusively on producing their flagship red blend, which combines Cabernet Sauvignon with Carmenère, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. This Bordeaux-style blend reflects both the terroir of the Aconcagua Valley and the winemaking philosophy of creating a wine that expresses the unique characteristics of Chilean viticulture while maintaining international standards of complexity and structure.

The Aconcagua Valley stretches across central Chile, approximately 100 kilometers north of Santiago, extending from the Andes Mountains in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. This transverse valley takes its name from the Aconcagua River and represents one of Chile's most geographically diverse wine regions, encompassing three distinct climate zones that range from cool coastal areas to warm inland sections.

The valley's climate varies dramatically from west to east due to the influence of ocean breezes, morning fog, and elevation changes. The coastal areas experience cool, maritime conditions ideal for white varieties and Pinot Noir, while the middle section around the town of San Felipe provides a moderate climate. The eastern sector near the Andes receives less ocean influence and experiences warmer, drier conditions with significant diurnal temperature variation due to altitude.

Red Bordeaux varieties dominate the warmer inland areas, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carménère, often blended with smaller proportions of Malbec and Petit Verdot. The region has gained recognition for producing structured, age-worthy red wines that benefit from the valley's rocky, alluvial soils and intense sunlight. Premium producers have established vineyards at various elevations and microclimates, creating complex blends that showcase the valley's diverse terroir.
