The estate of Château Cos D'Estournel dates back to the 18th century, when it was founded by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, d'Estournel was one of the first wine producers in Bordeaux to ship his wines directly to the United Kingdom and India, establishing a loyal following in these markets. This international reputation earned the estate the nickname "The Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe."

Today, Château Cos D'Estournel is owned by the Michel Reybier family, who purchased the estate in 2000. The Reybiers have continued the tradition of producing exceptional wines, while also implementing sustainable and organic practices in the vineyards.
