Wine Provenance and Storage: Why It Matters More Than the Label

Two bottles of the same wine, same vintage, same producer. One is worth full market price. The other is worth a fraction — and the difference is invisible on the label. Provenance is the difference, and it is the part of fine wine that new collectors underestimate most.

What provenance actually means

Provenance is the documented life story of a bottle: who bought it from whom, and — critically — where it sat in between. A wine that went producer → professional cellar → you has perfect provenance. A wine that passed through an auction house twice, a private dining room, and a summer above someone's fridge has a story you're gambling on.

Heat is the quiet killer

Wine wants a constant 12–14°C, decent humidity, darkness and stillness. It forgives brief excursions; it does not forgive a Riviera August in a garage. Heat-damaged wine tastes stewed and flat — and the cruelty is that the label looks fine. By the time a seeping cork or pushed capsule shows, the damage is years old.

How professionals check a bottle

  • Fill level (ullage) — into-neck is ideal for young wine; upper-shoulder on a 30-year-old Bordeaux is acceptable, mid-shoulder is a warning.
  • Capsule — signs of seepage, spinning capsules, or corrosion suggest heat or poor storage.
  • Label — a pristine label on a supposedly cellar-aged bottle is worth a question, though good cellars do preserve labels remarkably.
  • Cork (when visible) — pushed up or sunken corks flag temperature swings.
  • Storage history — the paper trail. The question to ask any merchant: where has this been since release? A good one answers precisely; a poor one changes the subject.

The economics of doing it properly

Professional storage sounds like a luxury until you price the alternative. Our climate-controlled storage near Antibes costs €24 per case per year ex VAT, insured up to €100,000, with documented in-and-out records. One case of premier cru Burgundy ruined by a hot summer costs more than a decade of storing fifty cases properly. And when you sell — or we buy your collection — that storage record converts directly into value: documented provenance is what we, and every serious buyer, pay full price for.

We supply yachts whose owners will notice a single tired bottle — so we buy directly from producers and established négociants, store in climate-controlled conditions, and check fill, capsule and label on older bottles before we offer them. When you buy from our collectors' service, the provenance question is already answered.
