The winery was founded by John Goelet, a descendant of a prominent French winemaking family, who recognized the immense potential of the Napa Valley for producing world-class wines. With the help of legendary winemaker Bernard Portet, Clos du Val quickly gained recognition for their elegant, Bordeaux-style wines, which were a departure from the heavier, high-alcohol wines that were popular at the time.

One of the key factors that sets Clos du Val apart is their commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices. The winery is certified Napa Green, meaning they adhere to strict environmental standards in their vineyards and winemaking processes. Clos du Val's vineyards are located in the Stags Leap District, one of the most sought-after and prestigious sub-regions of the Napa Valley. The winery also has vineyards in the Carneros and Yountville appellations, allowing them to produce a diverse range of wines with distinct characteristics.
